New plan proposal for former Appvion Paper Mill as demolition begins

Demolition of the Appvion Paper Mill in Roaring Spring has officially begun, and plans are in the works for what will eventually take its place. Representatives from the companies working on the site shared their post-demolition plans at the Roaring Spring Borough council meeting on Monday night. The Altoona Blair County Development Corp. along with an engineer working on the demolition presented not only the unique challenges of the site but also a new proposal for the future – a recreational area that will hopefully draw in crowds as well as revenue. Penn State's Famous 'Old Willow' Uprooted by High Winds

UNIVERSITY PARK, CENTRE COUNTY, Pa — Yesterday’s wind brought down many trees across our viewing area, but none with more historical significance than this tree on Penn State’s campus in Centre County. The original 'Old Willow' was planted on Penn State’s campus back in the 1800's. Yesterday, Mother Nature’s aggressive winds brought down the third descendant of the original campus landmark yesterday afternoon. Philadelphia Sheriff's Office cannot account for nearly 200 guns, city comptroller finds

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Sheriff's Office can't account for 185 missing guns, according to a report released this week by the city controller's office. Some of the missing guns were part of the sheriff's office's arsenal and others were confiscated from people subject to protection-from-abuse orders. Acting City Controller Charles Edacheril said his office conducted the review as a follow-up to a 2020 report that found the sheriff's office couldn't account for more than 200 weapons. Read More...
